Service Description

This single day field-based environmental science course immerses students in Arizona through hands-on scientific investigation. Students explore ecology, geology, forestry, wildlife biology, navigation, conservation, and outdoor leadership while traveling to study locations within the Tonto National Forest. Throughout the course, students develop scientific observation skills, maintain field journals, collect environmental data, and complete individual and group projects. Course Learning Outcomes, by the end of the course day students will be able to: understand some or all of the following. - Explain Arizona's major ecological regions and the significance of the Transition Zone. - Identify common native plants, trees, and wildlife. - Describe forest succession and disturbance. - Explain watershed functions. - Interpret topographic maps. - Navigate using map, compass, and GPS. - Collect and analyze field observations. - Demonstrate responsible outdoor ethics. - Apply basic wilderness risk management principles. - Present findings from field investigations. Conditions may include rocks, roots, steep or narrow sections, loose surfaces, weather changes, wildlife, and other natural hazards.
